Abstract
Centrosomes and microtubules play crucial roles during cell division and differentiation. Spermatogenesis is a useful system for studying centrosomal function since it involves both mitosis and meiosis, and also transformation of the centriole into the sperm basal body. Centrosomin is a protein localized to the mitotic centrosomes in Drosophila melanogaster. We have found a novel isoform of centrosomin expressed during spermatogenesis. Additionally, an anticentrosomin antibody labels both the mitotic and meiotic centrosomes as well as the basal body. Mutational analysis shows that centrosomin is required for spindle organization during meiosis and for organization of the sperm axoneme. These results suggest that centrosomin is a necessary component of the meiotic centrosomes and the spermatid basal body. PMID: [9548723]

Function
Core component of the centrosome throughoutspermatogenesis. May participate in mitotic spindle assembly andthe mechanics of morphogenesis through an interaction withmicrotubules, either directly or indirectly. Is a target ofseveral homeotic genes.

Subcellular Location
Cytoplasm. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, centrosome. Cytoplasm, cytoskeleton, flagellum basal body.Note=Localized to the centrosomes through complete nuclear cyclesin mitotic and meiotic cells. Redistributed into the cytoplasm inG2 phase cells. In post-meiotic stages, found associated with thebasal body of the maturing spermatid.
Tissue Specificity
Developing visceral mesoderm of the midgut, the central and peripheral nervous system, and developing gonads.Isoform C is expressed in ovaries, testis and embryos. Isoform Ais expressed in testis only.
