Function
Produces nitric oxide (NO) which is a messenger moleculewith diverse functions throughout the body. In the brain andperipheral nervous system, NO displays many properties of aneurotransmitter. Probably has nitrosylase activity and mediatescysteine S-nitrosylation of cytoplasmic target proteins such SRR.

Subcellular Location
Cell membrane, sarcolemma; Peripheralmembrane protein. Cell projection, dendritic spine (Bysimilarity). Note=In skeletal muscle, it is localized beneath thesarcolemma of fast-twitch muscle fiber by associating with thedystrophin glycoprotein complex. In neurons, enriched in dendriticspines (By similarity). 
Tissue Specificity
Isoform 1 is ubiquitously expressed: detectedin skeletal muscle and brain, also in testis, lung and kidney, andat low levels in heart, adrenal gland and retina. Not detected inthe platelets. Isoform 3 is expressed only in testis. Isoform 4 isdetected in testis, skeletal muscle, lung, and kidney, at lowlevels in the brain, but not in the heart and adrenal gland.
